I’ve written before about how the Internet is going to melt upon the reveal of an electric “Mustang Inspired” Crossover. Many thought it would not have Mustang in the name yet..
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
My only question..
I personally don’t really care they’re calling this Mustang-Edge looking thing that but I just can’t see the pony car faithful taking to this well. I guess we’ll find out Sunday.

It will need GT and V8 badges though.
Maybe V8-E. E8?

The “pony car faithful” can bitch all they want, this isn’t for them. They were never going to buy anything like this regardless of what it’s called.
Too many people feel that just because they like something, they have some sort of “ownership” over it.

So... in like 2023, the ST (and I presume, RS) trims will all be automatic crossovers and the Mustang brand will be...an automatic crossover, albeit a direct drive electric one.
- as an aside, as long as they dial up the crazy, I’d accept an RS Explorer or something. Cracking/popping exhaust and 500+hp required.

Oh no doubt. I just question whether it was truly necessary to dilute the Mustang brand in order to get more hype/sell more of these.
I’m just mainly amused because Mustang Faithful or any Muscle car seem like a sensitive bunch and this will be funny to watch.

Except they will - this will sell to people who want a Mustang, but go to Costco once a month and don’t think they can manage folding down the back seat, AND to people who have/had a Mustang already, but now have mobility problems and need something easier to get in/out of, or who now live in an area where leaves sometimes fall on their driveway.

Kinda wild that Ford went from a very enthusiast friendly brand with one generation of ST/RS in North America to this. But hey, maybe they know better than us.

But why is the question. I mean it’s not going to change what the real Mustang is but do they think that this sort of unimaginative thinking is going to accomplish anything? It’s like their HUGE brainstorm of starting SUV names with “E” or naming their big wagon after a briefly popular rapper. It does nothing on the positive side and may add to the negative.

Why not just make an electric version of the regular Mustang?
That was kind of my point in some of the comments, if they want to branch the Mustang brand off into different models, they need to start with a very similar car, not something that is the polar opposite to the existing Mustang.
An electric Mustang would be an obvious first step.

If it’s not for the “pony car faithful”, then why call it a Mustang? Why use the Mach name? Why style it after the only pony car in the lineup?
It’s more than just people bitching because they think they have some sort of “ownership” in the Mustang, it’s completely baffling from a marketing standpoint too.

I’m really glad I didn’t get a Ford/Mustang/Mach 1 tattoo now. I avoided it because I was worried that Ford would do something stupid.

From a Marketing perspective I can see how this will draw a lot of Hype that a regular electric crossover may not (see Audi E-Tron). However, I agree. At what expense is that worth. I think leaving it at “Mustang Inspired” and not actually naming it one would’ve been a better move.

Because it’s for people who’d like a Mustang but feel that it isn’t practical for them.
So, the answer is a car that will drive nothing like the established Mustang?
I have been very vocal about how the Mustang should be more practical, but by offering a hatchback with a different roof profile instead. O r even by using the existing Mustang chassis to make a 4 door performance sedan. All of those options would still feel like a Mustang, but still offer more utility for passengers and cargo space.
This will drive like an EV crossover That’s perfectly fine on it’s own, but it’s not at all similar to the Mustang. The average buyer might not know the difference between the two, but they will equate the name. That leaves a high potential for a false equivalency in people’s minds: “I rode in a 4 door Mustang, it didn’t feel that special, so I didn’t bother trying the coupe”.

You know I don’t hate that little Puma crossover (compared to the EcoSport), but all this cheap, small coupe to crossover makes me a bit sad. That second Puma looks SO good.

Those tires are embarr assingly small for anything called Mustang. Also, t his is the world we live in, where everything sucks and words have no meaning.
I’m thinking of that “Faster Horse” documentary, in which they made such a big deal about the meaning of Mustang, the way it feels, the significance it holds, and how important it is to work on it and get it right. There is real enthusiasm there, it’s an aspirational project within Ford. It’s an aspirational car for me. When everything is electric and boring (even if it’s fast), I wonder how that dynamic changes.

You know, the Raci ng Puma (widebody) was a bit of a monster, but more expensive than a Subaru WRX which didnt have a 150hp 1.7L engine and FWD.

Ford could of replaced the Ecosport with this car and used it’s name.
Granted the Puma is just a short lived Ford Fiesta made into a coupe but some of us have fond memories.

But, ye’, looks way too happy. The grille is looking less Aston Martin and more Mazda.

Two-time Mustang owner here - I don’t have a problem with this.
First off, it looks way more sculpted than any of Ford’s current SUVs, and maybe even any other SUV out there. Look at those rear hips! , and from some angles it seems to have RWD-proportions.
Secondly, being electric, it will probably have the straight-line performan ce to match (if not beat) the GT, and if they can finally make the Mustang handle well they can make this handle well too .
Third, diving into the SUV pool worked out very well for Porsche (yes, I know, apples-to-oranges) but I would argue that, at the time the C a yenne came out, Porsche = 911 (the Boxster did not have much history (it had only been out for 5-6 years) , and the 968/944/928/914 were all just footnotes in Porsche’s history). Done correctly, it will not dilute the brand but bring in those who may want an SUV but had not considered a Ford before, or had wanted a Mustang but couldn’t (kids, climate, needing one car, etc).
I would not get this instead of a Mustang, but I may get one in addition to . That would be a win for Ford.

I’m intrigued by the product. I don’t understand the Mustang branding but it’s not like anyone that buys it is going to be proudly boasting they own a Mustang.
Of course I’m considering a daily driver, especially one that’s electric or hybrid, so if this hits the spot then I will 100% show up to Mustang shows and post on Mustang forums with it.

Agree completely. I’m not opposed to more electric vehicles and am certainly looking forward to more enthusiast type ones. However, I’m just curious as to why the Mustang branding.
I can only think maybe because this will (or already is) gather a lot of attention that may have otherwise been overpassed if it was just a another electric crossover with a regular name. We shall see I guess.

For sure, those are all good points. I’m very curious to see what it’s performance specs will be. As calling something as Mustang is going to have a lot of expectations.
I think this might be Ford’s way of getting what would be just another electric vehicle into the N ews and Social Media. Might actually be a decent idea but I’m not 100% sold yet.

That was solely my opinion, and I’m not 100% either, but I’m sure Ford wouldn’t do this without a ton of research.
